When setting up a private channel in a Microsoft Team, some users get the following message when accessing the Files tab:
“Something went wrong. Access denied. You do not have permission to perform this action or access this resource.”
In Teams the correct channel members and owners have been added, and they can access everything in the channel, except for the Files tab.
This appears to occur because Teams hasn’t updated the SharePoint document library permissions correctly. This only happens occasionally and doesn’t affect the person who created the private channel.
To resolve this you can take the following steps:
- In Microsoft Teams go to Files within the private channel that you’re having the problem with and click Open in SharePoint:
- In SharePoint click the Settings Cog and then Library settings:
- Click Permissions for this document library.
- Now manually add the required users and groups into the Owners or Members groups.
This will resolve the problem of users not being able to access the Files tab, however, it doesn’t address the problem of why it occurred in the first place. It’s possible that there is just a delay between the private channel being created and the permissions of the document library being updated, but I can’t confirm this.
If you have a long term solution to this problem or know why it occurs, please share your thoughts in the comments.
