Distance learning demands teachers find new ways of sharing resources with students, and what better way than by video?
Screencast-o-matic allows teachers record their screen, webcam, and microphone to create instructional videos and provide personalised student feedback.
There are many screen recording apps and services available, but most only work with the app they’re built in to or create files so large it makes them impossible to share.
Screencast-o-matic solves many of these problems because the screen recordings it creates are tiny and can be uploaded and shared within your current school LMS or hosted on the Screen-o-matic website.
- Integrates with multiple education learning platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, and Moodle.
- Works cross platform, so you and your students can record your screen and view videos whether you’re on Mac, Windows, iPad, Chromebook and more.
- Videos can be saved or published online with easy access for students.
- Can record your screen, microphone, and webcam independently or at the same time for instructional videos.
- Can edit video within the app and add royalty free music.
- …and best of all it’s free to use.
Beyond instructional videos, you can use the webcam feature to engage students with video conversations and provide friendly student feedback, particularly important at a time when distance learning is common. Alternatively, students can record their own screen and provide thoughts and ideas during class discussions.
You can create simple, short videos, or capture an entire lesson that students can watch back later. You can share video links, add content your school learning platform, or create a channel on Screencast-O-Matic.
Let’s look at the app in more details.
Installing Screencast-o-matic on Windows & Mac
Screencast-o-matic is available in Windows, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Android, and Chromebook.
To install the app on Windows and Mac, just visit the download page, click Launch Free Recorder, and the installer file will download. The file is tiny, so it won’t take more than a minute or two to complete.
You’ll also be pleased to know that there’s also a separate installer to allow administrators to silently install the software across multiple Windows and Mac computers. Silent install works with Windows Server Group Policy, Microsoft Intune, and MDM services such as Airwatch.
Installing Screencast-o-matic on iPhone, iPad, and Android
To install the app on a tablet or smartphone, just visit your device’s app store:
How does it work?
When you first open the software, Screencast-o-matic will allow you to select the area of the screen that you want to record. In the image below you can see the black and white dotted window; this shows the area being recorded and can be dragged around using the crosshairs in the centre of the screen.
Before you start your recording, you can select from several options which include:
- Recording your screen, webcam, or both.
- Setting a time limit for the recording.
- Manually adjusting the size of the recorded area and final video.
- Add narration via your microphone.
- Include audio from your computer, for example, if you’re playing a video or piece of music.
The Preferences menu offers further features and shortcuts including options to pause the video mid-recording, enable and disable your webcam, and a countdown bar.
Once you’ve selected the part of the screen to be recorded, just click the red record button and your recording will start.
When you’ve clicked Stop to end your recording, the following options will be available:
- Save to your computer or uploading to Screen-o-matic for sharing.
- Edit the video with the built-in editor.
- Delete the recording.
If you choose to upload your recording, it will be uploaded and made available via a link in a clean video player on the Screencast-o-matic website. Before uploading you have the option of making the video searchable or creating a private link.
Educationally relevant ads occasionally show on this view but if this is a concern you can upgrade your account to remove the adverts. Every time I accessed the site, however, there were never any visible adverts.
Once published you can also choose to copy a link to your uploaded video or share it directly with several educational learning platforms. There are more details on this below.
Screencast-o-matic integrates out-of-the-box with many popular school learning platforms:
Share screen recordings with students directly in Teams classes or via chat conversations.
Upload your videos to Google Drive to create a library of videos to be shared with your students.
Other supported school learning platforms and services include:
To view all of the supported platforms, take a look at the integrations page.
Most of the score features of the app are free to use, including screen recording and upload. You can upgrade to a paid account, however, for $1.65/month to unlock additional features:
- Record computer audio
- Import narration and music
- Scripted recordings
- Draw and zoom
- Screenshot tool
- Create captions with Speech-to-Text Green Screen Filter
Screencast-o-matic is an easy to use but powerful screen recording application which supports any device and operating system your students may be using. The integration with LMS systems, including the popular Microsoft Teams and Google Classroom, make this a far more robust option than some of the app specific recording features built into Teams and PowerPoint. While paid plans are available, you can use most of the core features of the app at no cost.
