Windows 8.1 — the free update for Windows 8 — is due for release on the 26th of July and looks like it’s going to provide a lot of new features that Network Administrators are clamouring for.
Aside from the already confirmed return of the Start button and “boot to desktop” feature, the update will include native Miracast support, meaning iPad AirPlay style screen mirroring will work without any additional hardware.
Other features included are:
- Administrative control of the Windows 8 Start Screen. IT departments can now control which icons are show on the Start Screen and prevent users from customising the layout.
- Open MDM support, which means third-party MDM providers such as Meraki and AirWatch can manage devices without the need to install a specific agent.
- Wi-Fi Direct printing.
