Microsoft has finally released an Office app for iPhone — yes, iPhone, not iPad.
The app is available to download for free in the iTunes App Store but requires an Office 365 subscription to use. If your organisation already uses Office 365 then you should be good to go, otherwise you’ll need to register for a subscription.
The application synchronises data with SkyDrive to enable you to access your documents wherever you are and allows you to open email attachments in Office for immediate editing.
The editing options are very limited, this feels like a barebones application, however, there is potential here. If you are expecting a full office suite you should dampen down your expectations.
The lack of an iPad version is disappointing, but one will inevitably be released sometime in the future. Microsoft are leaving their Office push in to mobile very late, and with competition from Apple and Google they can’t rely on their desktop dominance to ensure them a spot on mobile devices for much longer.
With further updates this could be an excellent application, as it is this only provides the absolute basics.
