Google has released an Android application to allow Google Apps Super Administrators to manage their domain from an Android device. The application works on both phones and tablets and allows administrators to view and edit user accounts and groups. While current functionality is fairly limited the application shows promise and fills a requirement many Google Apps administrators have been requesting for a while.
A nice feature is that you can initiate a telephone call to Google Apps support from within the application. The Support screen also helpfully displays your customer and support pins for easy access.
If you’re using Google Apps Domain or Password Sync, however, the application in its current form will be of limited use to you. Making changes will not sync back to your Active Directory or LDAP domain and may cause sync to break or even accounts to be accidentally deleted.
This is a delayed but inevitable and extremely useful step forward for Google Apps. Being able to manage user accounts and groups without being tied to a desktop will open many new possibilities for supporting Google Apps users in the classroom and from outside the IT office.
The application can be downloaded from the Google Play Store for free now.
