Apple has updated its Volume Purchase Program to improve MDM integration, allow purchased apps to be reclaimed, and install apps silently.
Apple is introducing a new app distribution model for MDM services called “Managed Distribution”. Previously MDM services could distribute VPP coupon codes to users, but once the code was used it was permanently assigned to that user and could never be reclaimed. “Managed Distribution” allows you to assign an app to a specific Apple ID and then reclaim it at a later date to be redistributed to another user.
All app installations and app recalls can be done over the air without need for end-user interaction. Under the new system app installs can be carried out silently, where previously the user was required to accept the install. If your MDM service supports it, you can also assign apps to groups of users, for easy app distribution and installation.
The updates to VPP, which requires each user to be assigned a personal Apple ID, arrives at the same time as Apple announced the Apple ID for Students program.
