Create an Apple ID Without A Credit Card

16 July 2013 by Karl Rivers 17 Comments

When registering for an Apple ID you normally have to enter payment information. In education, however, there are numerous reasons why you may not want to associate a credit card to an Apple ID. This is how you create an account without a credit card.

On a PC or Mac

  1. Open iTunes and navigate to the iPad App Store.
  2. Find a free app (it can be anything) and download it to your computer.
  3. A window will pop up asking you to login with your Apple ID. Instead click the Create Apple ID button.
  4. The “Welcome to the iTunes Store” screen will appear. Click Continue.
  5. Agree to the terms of service and enter your personal information and security details as normal.
  6. At this point you will be asked for payment information. You will notice, however, that there is now a “None” option where you would normally select your card type. Choose this option.
  7. Once you’ve completed the registration process a confirmation email will be sent to the address you registered above. You will now be able to use Apple services and install free apps with your new account.

On an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Find a free app (it can be anything) and install it.
  3. A window will pop up asking whether you want to “Use an Existing Apple ID” or “Create New Apple ID”. Choose “Create New Apple ID.”
  4. Choose your country, agree to the terms of service, and enter your personal information and security details as normal.
  5. At this point you will be asked for payment information. You will notice, however, that there is now a “None” option where you would normally select your card type. Choose this option.
  6. Once you’ve completed the registration process a confirmation email will be sent to the address you registered above. You will now be able to use Apple services and install free apps with your new account.

      Hi Praveen,

You have to follow the instructions to the letter otherwise you can get to the point where you are only offered the option to enter card details. If you’re setting up a new Apple ID it’s worth starting from scratch, possibly with a new email address.

      Hi Scott,

This definitely works and is the procedure recommended by Apple. You have to follow the instructions exactly.

This only works with a NEW Apple ID. If you’re already registered you can’t use this option.

      Hope this helps.

        Hi Andrea,

Where are you getting stuck? Apple should send you a verification email.
