Trouble adding student groups to Google Classroom? Google knows.

28 August 2014 by Karl Rivers 12 Comments

It’s almost the start of a new term and teachers around the world are experimenting with Google Classroom — Google’s first cloud learning environment.

But there’s a problem — several people in the last week have contacted us with the same issue. Assigning a group of students to a class doesn’t work. You can add individuals, but sharing a class with a Google Group gives the error “Oops! There was a problem adding the following user to the course. Please try again.”

I contacted Google who have confirmed that the problem is a known bug and fixing it is a high priority. Bugs are expected in early release products but this seems like a significant issue to overlook. I’ll post an update once the problem has been resolved.

How are you getting on with Google Classroom, all the teachers I’ve spoken too that have used it have loved it!

I have used classroom just as an aggregator of links for students so far and for that basic task it has been perfect. Adding students was easy since we are a GAFE district and all students already have accounts. just physically give or show them the class code and they are in…

Tomorrow I will be using it to share an “assignment” and will attempt to use the basic grading it has to provide feedback, so i can comment after.

But i really like using it as a hub rather than my website, so students know to log in to classroom right when the chromebook or ipad fires up and that their assignment will be waiting.

Great use case David! I’ve started using it for staff Google Apps training. Creating a class and adding resources is really simple, and by using it they’re using Google Apps anyway. Can’t wait to see how it develops. Let me know how you get on.

dear Karl, to get started with Google Classroom what we’ve done is:
    1. Enabled Groups for Business
    2. Enabled Google Classroom
    3. One Teacher logged in as Teacher, created three classrooms and then he can’t create a fourth one. it then only gives him option to join classes. no create option available..
    4. as a Super-Admin, I can’t get in as Teacher (it says: oops there was an error…) but can get in as student and join class
    5. as per google discussion groups, I saw no “classroom_teachers” group in google groups, so how do I add teachers to that group and permit?
    6. how can I control the groups for business as Admin, when I log in, it only shows “My Groups”

so many questions but I really need to have them to get us going with this wonderful feature. if you share your knowledge it would be highly appreciated. thanks…/Lytton

      Hi Mohammed,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. When I’m back in the office I’ll give this a test and see of we can come up with some solutions.

Apparently this problem still exists in GAFE at the end of November. We also have another problem, in Classroom, if we go to Invite and then select Groups, none of the groups we have created are there except for Classroom teachers. I have another group called Algebra1 but I can’t see that group in the invite.

Additionally, Google Classroom cannot find some students by name or email address (all same domain, our school). Any idea why? Thanks very much!

Haven’t come across this problem myself. How often do you have it?

    Hi there,

I’m evaluating Google Classroom, having set up the admin all by my lonesome after purchasing a domain name etc etc.

The reason for my post is I’m experiencing the same problem 4/5 months after your last post. Would like to know if anyone is still unable to see manually created groups in the classroom when assigning.

      Hi there,

This still seems to be an issue, but you can use Google Groups from the groups tab at the top, but it’s not ideal.

I’ll chase this up with Google and see if it’s still on their list of priorities.

In classroom, when I select Invite, I can see groups that I am a member of but not all the groups in the directory, not general groups of students (that I would need to invite them). I don’t want to have to add all staff to my group of all students (because then it wouldn’t be just all students).
