From September Google Vault will support domain wide backup of Google Drive files. Hallelujah!
Google Vault allows Google Apps Administrators to archive and search data stored in specific Google Apps. Until now only GMail and Chat were supported, but from September Google Drive will also be included in the system.
A huge concern when considering the use of Google Drive is that data stored in the service is not subject to usual data retention policies applied to locally stored data. Currently, if a user deletes a file from their Google App’s “Bin”, there is no way to recover that information. This problem has implications for data retention, recovering, and personnel management.
For Administrators of Google Apps, Google Drive is currently a black hole into which users can store anything they wish without monitoring. Google Vault will allow Administrators for the first time to search and export files domain wide without requiring access to a user’s account.
While scheduled offline backups would be nice, Google Vault alleviates many — but not all — concerns of storing data in the Cloud.
The education pricing for Google Vault is £990 per domain per year for 150 staff or less, students accounts are free. Google’s largest Google Apps partner, C-Learning, can be contacted for more information.
