We like to give our students a taste of how computers used to be before the touch screen ruled the world. To experience old operating systems like MS-DOS, Windows 95, and older flavours of Linux we came up with a variety ways to get them running.
Virtual machines are a favourite, or just installing the OS on an old computer, but all of these are time consuming and difficult to set up unless you have good technical support. Luckily, with the wonder of powerful web apps there’s now a simpler way for students to get their hands on computers of the past.
DOSBox for Google Chrome is a DOS emulator that runs right in your web browser. Installation is a single click, and it can be used on Chromebooks as well. DOSBox is designed to run old DOS games, but it gives you all the standard features of a standard DOS install as well, with the added benefit that if your students mess it up you just delete and start again. Check it out DOSBox for Chrome today!
